Shadashivrao Bhau (Arjun Kapoor) is a commander in his cousin Nanasaheb Peshwas (Mohnish Bahl) army. He finally annexed the Udgiri Fort in present-day southern Maharashtra and thereby finish the Nizamshahi rule for good. The Marathas have now occupied most of India.  Nanasaheb is impressed with the developments that are happening. However, his wife wife Gopika Bai (Padmini Kolhapure) is insecure with her husbands fondness and trust for Sadashiv Rao. On her advice, Sadashiv is given the responsibility of handling the treasury. Thats when he realizes that the Northen territories under their rule arent paying their taxes properly and Nanasaheb decides to teach them a lesson. A message is then sent to all these kings, including Mughal emperor Alamgir II (SM Zaheer. Najib-Ud-Daula (Mantra) is a part of the Mughal court and hes asked to leave. He has had enough of the Marathas and their rule and decides to end their rule once and for all. For achieving that, he asks Ahmed Shah Abdali (Sanjay Dutt) the Afghan ruler of Kandahar for his help. Initially after refusing to help, Ahmed Shah decides to help them and leaves for India with his army of one lakh men. The marathas find out about this, and Sadashiv is confident that they can defeat them. What happens next forms the rest of the film. Panipat has a nicely layered narrative and focuses on some finer aspects of the era, especially the times that lead to a war. The film has been tried to made as close to reality as possible and the effort shows on the screen. The film, not only does entertain but also enlightens the viewers about this part of the history of India. The writing is good but lacks consistency. The biggest issue with the film is the lenght. The movie has a runtime of close to three-hours and it couldve been easily trimmed up. The climactic war sequence has been handled superbly and keeps you on the edge of the seat. The film takes time to build up and the main drama starts after the interval. Technically, the film is great. CK Muraleedharans cinematography is right out of the top drawer and deserves an ovation! Hes captured the war sequences beautifully. Production design and costume design as expected is larger than life and is  stunning. Action has been wonderfully choreographed. The VFX is fine. Editing by Steven Bernard is good but he could have kept it more tight. Performance wise the film is good. Arjun Kapoor gives his 100% in the film and it shows. He gets into the skin of his character and becomes the Maratha that he is playing in the film. Sanjay Dutt manages to make himself as menacing as the character on the paper is. He is quite brilliant in his portrayal of the Mughal. Kriti Sanon gives a confident performance and impresses with her act. This has to be her career best, she is simply superb in the film. Mohnish Bahl is good but is barely seen in the second half. Sahil Salathia (Shamsher Bahadur; Bajirao and Mastanis son) makes an impact with his act. The rest of the cast offer great support. Director Ashutosh Gowarikar does a fine job and tells the story earnestly.
